Is there a high risk for investing money in US Treasury bills?
While interest rates and inflation can affect Treasury bill rates, they're generally considered a lower-risk (but lower-reward) investment than other debt securities. Treasury bills are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. If held to maturity, T-bills are considered virtually risk-free.
Treasury securities are considered a safe and secure investment option because the full faith and credit of the U.S. government guarantees that interest and principal payments will be paid on time. Also, most Treasury securities are liquid, which means they can easily be sold for cash.
4 Week Treasury Bill Rate is at 5.28%, compared to 5.28% the previous market day and 4.66% last year. This is higher than the long term average of 1.39%. The 4 Week Treasury Bill Rate is the yield received for investing in a US government issued treasury bill that has a maturity of 4 weeks.
“They're guaranteed by the full faith and credit of the us government,” Schatz said. “It is the single safest investment on the face of the earth.” Historically, that safety has come at the expense of profitability. As recently as two years ago, the yearly return for T-Bills was effectively zero.
They are considered among the safest investments since they are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government. As such, Treasury Bills are not only an important vehicle for traders and investors to invest for short amounts of time, they are also used as a baseline for other investment returns.
Pros and Cons of T-Bills
Treasury Bills are one of the safest investments available to the investor. But this safety can come at a cost. T-bills pay a fixed rate of interest, which can provide a stable income.
Choosing between a CD and Treasuries depends on how long of a term you want. For terms of one to six months, as well as 10 years, rates are close enough that Treasuries are the better pick. For terms of one to five years, CDs are currently paying more, and it's a large enough difference to give them the edge.
Treasury bills, or bills, are typically issued at a discount from the par amount (also called face value). For example, if you buy a $1,000 bill at a price per $100 of $99.986111, then you would pay $999.86 ($1,000 x . 99986111 = $999.86111).
Face Value | Purchase Amount | 30-Year Value (Purchased May 1990) |
---|---|---|
$50 Bond | $100 | $207.36 |
$100 Bond | $200 | $414.72 |
$500 Bond | $400 | $1,036.80 |
$1,000 Bond | $800 | $2,073.60 |
1 Year Treasury Rate is at 4.92%, compared to 4.93% the previous market day and 5.18% last year. This is higher than the long term average of 2.94%. The 1 Year Treasury Rate is the yield received for investing in a US government issued treasury security that has a maturity of 1 year.
Which is safer a CD or Treasury bill?
Choosing your investment
Yields aren't the only consideration when choosing among T-bills, CDs and money-market funds. While all are considered exceptionally safe, CDs can't be liquidated early without triggering an early-withdrawal penalty.
Unlike a debt-limit default, a shutdown does not affect the government's ability to pay its debt to bondholders and therefore does not have a direct impact on the government's borrowing costs or creditworthiness.
Key Takeaways
Interest from Treasury bills (T-bills) is subject to federal income taxes but not state or local taxes.
3 Month Treasury Bill Rate is at 5.24%, compared to 5.24% the previous market day and 4.83% last year. This is higher than the long term average of 4.19%. The 3 Month Treasury Bill Rate is the yield received for investing in a government issued treasury security that has a maturity of 3 months.
One of the most common ways to purchase Treasury bills is through a bank. Banks usually offer an array of T-bill products with varying maturities and yields, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your investment needs.
Now issued in | Electronic form only |
---|---|
Interest paid | When the bill matures |
Minimum purchase | $100 |
In increments of | $100 |
Maximum purchase | $10 million (non-competitive bid) 35% of offering amount (competitive bid) (See Buying a Treasury marketable security for information on types of bids.) |
But they can have some downsides worth considering. For one, the interest rate is variable, meaning it can go down. Some banks may also charge fees for these accounts. And though they pay higher rates than traditional savings accounts, you won't grow your money as quickly as you could by investing in the market.
When your T-bill matures, its life is over. The US government will pay you the full face value of the bond. In our example above, you'd simply see the bond disappear out of your brokerage account or IRA and be replaced with $1,000.
Investors who hold T-bills can rest assured that they will not lose their investment. T-Bills are considered a zero-risk investment thanks also to Treasury market liquidity.
When you buy T-bills through your bank, it may charge you additional fees and expenses such as sales commissions or transaction charges. These extra costs can add up over time and eat into your returns on your investment.
What is the current 6 month T-bill rate?
3 Year Treasury Rate | 4.32% |
---|---|
30-10 Year Treasury Yield Spread | 0.14% |
5 Year Treasury Rate | 4.13% |
6 Month Treasury Rate | 5.35% |
7 Year Treasury Rate | 4.15% |
There are several ways to buy Treasuries. For many people, TreasuryDirect is a good option; however, retirement savers and investors who already have brokerage accounts are often better off buying bonds on the secondary market or with exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
You can hold Treasury bills until they mature or sell them before they mature. To sell a bill you hold in TreasuryDirect or Legacy TreasuryDirect, first transfer the bill to a bank, broker, or dealer, then ask the bank, broker, or dealer to sell the bill for you.
Treasury notes are medium-term, ranging from two to 10 years, and are otherwise the same, with semiannual interest payments and the face value when they mature. Treasury bills mature within a year, do not pay interest, and are sold at a discount to the face value that you get at maturity.
The pros and cons of taking refuge in cash now that yields are hovering above 5%. Cash investors haven't had it this good in years. After a long period of near-zero yields, yields on the three-month Treasury bill have been as high as 5.5% so far in 2023—their highest level since December 2000.
