Do you pay taxes on Treasuries?
Interest from corporate bonds and U.S. Treasury bonds interest is typically taxable at the federal level. U.S. Treasuries are exempt from state and local income taxes. Most interest income earned on municipal bonds is exempt from federal income taxes.
Interest income from Treasury bills, notes and bonds - This interest is subject to federal income tax, but is exempt from all state and local income taxes.
- Report interest each year and pay taxes on it annually.
- Defer reporting interest until you redeem the bonds or give up ownership of the bond and it's reissued or the bond is no longer earning interest because it's matured.
More about savings bonds
The interest earned by purchasing and holding savings bonds is subject to federal tax at the time the bonds are redeemed. However, interest earned on savings bonds is not taxable at the state or local level.
Treasuries are exempt from state income taxes, whereas CDs are subject to both federal and state income taxes. As a result, investors who are choosing between the two options should start with what account type they are investing in, and then consider what their state tax rate is.
Treasury bills can be a good choice for those looking for a low-risk, fixed-rate investment that doesn't require setting money aside for as long as a CD might call for. However, you still run the risk of losing out on higher rates and returns if the market is on the upswing while your money is locked in.
We report annually to you and the IRS all interest earned on Treasury bills and all semiannual interest payments on Treasury notes and bonds. Specifically, we provide: A 1099 – I N T reporting the total amount of interest earned and the amount withheld and paid to the IRS for the previous calendar year.
Interest from your bonds goes on your federal income tax return on the same line with other interest income.
Income from bonds issued by the federal government and its agencies, including Treasury securities, is generally exempt from state and local taxes.

$100 Bond | $200 | $414.72 |
$500 Bond | $400 | $1,036.80 |

Which bonds are tax free?
Municipal Bonds
Most bonds issued by government agencies are tax-exempt. This means interest on these bonds are excluded from gross income for federal tax purposes.
Zero-coupon Treasuries are taxed as if you were receiving annual interest income, even though you won't receive any income until the bond matures.
All interest income is taxable unless specifically excluded. tax-exempt interest income — interest income that is not subject to income tax. Tax-exempt interest income is earned from bonds issued by states, cities, or counties and the District of Columbia.
Cons. Lower yield: You'll typically earn less interest on Treasuries compared with other, riskier securities. Tax considerations: If you buy a bond at a discount and either hold it until maturity or sell it at a profit, that capital gain will be subject to federal and state taxes.
Cons: Interest Rate Risk: Long-term treasuries are more sensitive to changes in interest rates than short-term ones. If interest rates rise, the value of existing long-term bonds may decline, leading to potential capital losses.
The biggest downside of investing in T-bills is that you're going to get a lower rate of return compared to other investments, such as certificates of deposit, money market funds, corporate bonds or stocks. If you're looking to make some serious gains in your portfolio, T-bills aren't going to cut it.
Investors who hold T-bills can rest assured that they will not lose their investment. T-Bills are considered a zero-risk investment thanks also to Treasury market liquidity.
longer-term CDs appear to offer materially higher yields than Treasuries with the same maturity.” “Appear” is the crucial qualifier.
CDs vs.
The reason why? The interest you earn on your CDs is subject to both federal and state income tax while only federal income tax applies to interest income from Treasurys—not state or local tax. By calculating your tax burden on a CD versus a Treasury, you can get an idea of what would be more lucrative for you.
Paying taxes early through withholding
We can withhold up to 50 percent of the interest you earn. To withhold taxes: TreasuryDirect: In your TreasuryDirect account, tell us the percent to withhold. Legacy Treasury Direct: Call or write to us to tell us the percent to withhold.
