Is it good to buy bonds now?
Yields on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury moved higher at the start of 2024 but are mostly holding between 4.20% and 4.30% now, well below earlier peaks of nearly 5%. Bonds in the current environment appear to offer investors more attractive long-term opportunities.

Strong demand should support bonds in 2024
I believe investors are going to shift an increasing amount of money to fixed income and more interest rate-sensitive assets in 2024 as the Fed has signaled an end to its hiking cycle.
They provide a predictable income stream. Typically, bonds pay interest on a regular schedule, such as every six months. If the bonds are held to maturity, bondholders get back the entire principal, so bonds are a way to preserve capital while investing. Bonds can help offset exposure to more volatile stock holdings.
The pros and cons of taking refuge in cash now that yields are hovering above 5%. Cash investors haven't had it this good in years. After a long period of near-zero yields, yields on the three-month Treasury bill have been as high as 5.5% so far in 2023—their highest level since December 2000.
Risk: Savings bonds are backed by the U.S. government, so they're considered about as safe as an investment comes. However, don't forget that the bond's interest payment will fall if and when inflation settles back down.

Unless you are set on holding your bonds until maturity despite the upcoming availability of more lucrative options, a looming interest rate hike should be a clear sell signal.
Moving 401(k) assets into bonds could make sense if you're closer to retirement age or you're generally a more conservative investor overall. However, doing so could potentially cost you growth in your portfolio over time.
In line with the outlook from other investment providers, the firm is forecasting a 5.7% gain in 2024 for U.S. investment-grade bonds, versus 4.9% last year and 2.3% in 2022. (All figures are nominal.)
Should I buy CDs or bonds?
Bonds offer a fixed, predictable income from interest. They are also more liquid and may see greater returns than CDs. However, if you're looking for a highly secure and easy way to earn interest, CDs may be more suitable to your goals.
Interest rate changes are the primary culprit when bond exchange-traded funds (ETFs) lose value. As interest rates rise, the prices of existing bonds fall, which impacts the value of the ETFs holding these assets.
- Values Drop When Interest Rates Rise. You can buy bonds when they're first issued or purchase existing bonds from bondholders on the secondary market. ...
- Yields Might Not Keep Up With Inflation. ...
- Some Bonds Can Be Called Early.
Key central bank rates and bond yields remain high globally and are likely to remain elevated well into 2024 before retreating. Further, the chance of higher policy rates from here is slim; the potential for rates to decline is much higher.
While he could invest Berkshire Hathaway's massive cash hoard of over $100 billion in nearly anything, for the time being, he's sticking with T-bills. As he told CNBC in Aug. 2023, “Berkshire bought $10 billion in U.S. Treasurys last Monday. We bought $10 billion in Treasurys this Monday.
Bond prices have an inverse relationship with interest rates. This means that when interest rates go up, bond prices go down and when interest rates go down, bond prices go up.
If sold prior to maturity, market price may be higher or lower than what you paid for the bond, leading to a capital gain or loss. If bought and held to maturity investor is not affected by market risk.

Where is the best place to invest $1,000 right now?
Put it in an IRA
If you're wondering how to invest $1,000, putting your money in a retirement account offers one of the highest potential returns. If you opt for a traditional IRA, you can deduct any income taxes you would otherwise pay on that $1,000, if you meet the income limits.
ETF | Expense ratio | Yield to maturity |

SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF (SPTS) | 0.03% | 4.5% |
SPDR Portfolio Intermediate Term Treasury ETF (SPTI) | 0.03% | 4.2% |
SPDR Portfolio Long Term Treasury ETF (SPTL) | 0.03% | 4.5% |
Inflation is a bond's worst enemy. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of a bond's future cash flows. Typically, bonds are fixed-rate investments. If inflation is increasing (or rising prices), the return on a bond is reduced in real terms, meaning adjusted for inflation.
Face Value | Purchase Amount | 30-Year Value (Purchased May 1990) |
---|---|---|
$50 Bond | $100 | $207.36 |
$100 Bond | $200 | $414.72 |
$500 Bond | $400 | $1,036.80 |
$1,000 Bond | $800 | $2,073.60 |
You can count on a Series I bond to hold its value; that is, the bond's redemption value will not decline. Question: What is the inflation rate? November 1 of each year. For example, the earnings rate announced on May 1 reflects an inflation rate from the previous October through March.
