For us to replace or cash your EE or I savings bond, you must fill out and submit FS Form 1048. To get the correct version, answer this question: Do you know your bonds' serial numbers? Use this FS Form 1048.
With your Social Security Number (or Taxpayer Identification Number) or name and state, you can use our Treasury Hunt search to see if you have any savings bonds listed in our database. If you do, you'll get information on how to claim and cash them.
Use the Treasury Hunt® tool to discover if you own savings bonds.
The legal representative of the estate needs to complete a Request To Reissue United States Savings Bonds (FS Form 4000). If Series HH bonds are being reissued, the legal representative must complete and sign a Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form (FS Form 5396) for direct deposit of the interest payments.

One key difference between individual bonds and bond funds is that with bond funds, there's no guarantee that you'll recover your principal at a specific time, particularly in a rising-rate environment.
Or you can call us for a replacement Bond record and we'll send it to you. If you aren't registered for our online and phone service, you can write to us and ask for a replacement Bond record too. This Bond record will show all the Bonds you hold and your holder's number.
Paper EE or I savings bonds. Note: Do not buy savings bonds from someone else or in an online auction site. You cannot cash them. You can only cash bonds that you own or co-own unless you have legal evidence or other documentation that we accept to show you are entitled to cash the bond.
While the Treasury will not penalize you for holding a U.S. Savings Bond past its date of maturity, the Internal Revenue Service will. Interest accumulated over the life of a U.S. Savings Bond must be reported on your 1040 form for the tax year in which you redeem the bond or it reaches final maturity.
Can I cash my deceased parents savings bonds?
Sometimes, the beneficiary is designated on the savings bond. The bond will then go to the beneficiary when the bond owner dies. The U.S. Treasury Department will require a certified death certificate and other documentation so that the beneficiary may claim the bond.
Is it an obvious difference, like a shortened first name, a maiden or married name? Have them re-sign, note the explanation, and proceed. If it's not obvious or the explanation doesn't satisfy you, don't cash the bond; refer the customer to TreasuryDirect.gov and its instructions for cashing by mail.
If you moved your EE bond into a TreasuryDirect account, we pay you for the bond as soon as it reaches 30 years and stops earning interest. If you still have a paper EE bond, check the issue date. If that date is more than 30 years ago, it is no longer increasing in value and you may want to cash it.
Get a certified copy of the death certificate for everyone who has died who is named on any of the bonds. Have each person who is entitled to a distributed bond also fill out and sign the appropriate forms: If they want cash for their bond: FS Form 1522. If it is an EE or I bond and they want to keep it: FS Form 4000.
Our call center hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm ET. You may reach us at 844-284-2676.
When you cash in a paper EE or I bond, sign both your name that is on the bond and your current name with the reason for the name change. When you cash in a paper EE or I bond, sign your correct name. You do not need to do anything. The address on your paper EE or I bond was just to mail it to you.
Every Patriot Bond earns interest, which accrues in six-month periods. After 20 years, the Patriot Bond is guaranteed to be worth at least face value. So a $50 Patriot Bond, which was bought for $25, will be worth at least $50 after 20 years. It can continue to accrue interest for as many as 10 more years after that.
Total Price | Total Value | Total Interest |
---|---|---|
$50.00 | $69.94 | $19.94 |
Series EE savings bonds are a low-risk way to save money. They earn interest regularly for 30 years (or until you cash them if you do that before 30 years). For EE bonds you buy now, we guarantee that the bond will double in value in 20 years, even if we have to add money at 20 years to make that happen.
Interest rate changes are the primary culprit when bond exchange-traded funds (ETFs) lose value. As interest rates rise, the prices of existing bonds fall, which impacts the value of the ETFs holding these assets.
Can bonds lose all value?
Bonds are often touted as less risky than stocks—and for the most part, they are—but that does not mean you cannot lose money owning bonds. Bond prices decline when interest rates rise, when the issuer experiences a negative credit event, or as market liquidity dries up.
If the issuer defaults on payment of the bond, the bond price could plummet. If the issuer goes bankrupt (in the case of a company), the bond may become totally worthless, depending on the company's financial situation.
You can contact NS&I to discuss cashing out the Bonds of someone who passed away or to enquire about previously unknown/unclaimed Bonds. It's important to consider that although the winnings are not taxable when won, they are included in the estate for the purposes of Inheritance Tax (if applicable).
*If you can't find your holder's number or account number, you can phone NS&I on 08085 007 007 or write and ask for a replacement bond record to be sent to you. Give as much detail as you can about your past addresses, where and when you bought the Premium Bonds and how much they might be worth.
