Why are banks collapsing 2023?
Banking Turmoil 2023
2023 Bank Failures
The Fed raised the Effective Federal Funds Rate from 0.09% at the beginning of 2022 to 5.09% by mid-July 2023 and the value of those bonds plummeted. At the same time, as the tech industry slowed and funding for startups became less available, more SVB customers needed to withdraw their money.
Understanding Bank Failures
The most common cause of bank failure is when the value of the bank's assets falls below the market value of the bank's liabilities, which are the bank's obligations to creditors and depositors. This might happen because the bank loses too much on its investments.
While the US banking sector is stable, growing vulnerabilities leave at least some institutions under a near-term threat of funding pressure and capital shortfalls, according to Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff.
The FDIC uses a number of methods to resolve failed banks including deposit payoffs, insured-deposit transfers, purchase and assumption (P&A) agreements, whole- bank transactions, and open-bank assistance.
Recently, a report posted on the Social Science Research Network found that 186 banks in the United States are at risk of failure or collapse due to rising interest rates and a high proportion of uninsured deposits.
- First Republic Bank (FRC) . Above average liquidity risk and high capital risk.
- Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) . Above average capital risk.
- KeyCorp (KEY) . Above average capital risk.
- Comerica (CMA) . ...
- Truist Financial (TFC) . ...
- Cullen/Frost Bankers (CFR) . ...
- Zions Bancorporation (ZION) .
It stemmed from the bank's risky mortgage lending practices. Even more recently were the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in 2023. These niche banks with large amounts of uninsured deposits have led federal regulators to look at additional regulatory practices to help keep financial systems stable.
If your bank fails, up to $250,000 of deposited money (per person, per account ownership type) is protected by the FDIC. When banks fail, the most common outcome is that another bank takes over the assets and your accounts are simply transferred over. If not, the FDIC will pay you out.
If your deposits are within the FDIC insurance limits of $250,000 per person, per account, you won't lose any money if your bank closes. But if you exceed these limits, the failed bank's estate is responsible for the remaining amount, and you might have to file a claim to get the rest.

2024 in Brief

Generally, credit unions are viewed as safer than banks, although deposits at both types of financial institutions are usually insured at the same dollar amounts. The FDIC insures deposits at most banks, and the NCUA insures deposits at most credit unions.
The result: A net 1,409 bank branches closed in 2023, compared with 1,854 in 2022, according to the S&P Global data. Both years were down notably from the all-time high in 2021.
The increase in mobile banking use, inflation and interest rates, and real-estate struggles all contributed to why 2023 experienced so many banks shutting their doors. These issues caused Silicon Valley Bank to collapse in March 2023, with First Republic Bank and Signature Bank following only a few months later.

“In theory, your money is safe,” Pendergast says. “But that's a bit like saying your house is safe during an inferno if you have fire coverage. It's not a stress-free process to go through.” The main cause for worry during a bank failure would be if the total of your deposits exceeds the FDIC coverage limit.

How likely is a recession in 2024? Overall, neither Faucher nor Daco are forecasting that a pullback in consumer spending will trigger a downturn. As long as incomes continue to grow solidly, the savings rate can increase even as consumption also rises, they say.
