How stable are US banks now?
While the US banking sector is stable, growing vulnerabilities leave at least some institutions under a near-term threat of funding pressure and capital shortfalls, according to Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff.
Most deposits in banks are insured dollar-for-dollar by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. This insurance covers your principal and any interest you're owed through the date of your bank's default up to $250,000 in combined total balances.
Recently, a report posted on the Social Science Research Network found that 186 banks in the United States are at risk of failure or collapse due to rising interest rates and a high proportion of uninsured deposits.

Flawed Bank Analysis
Banks fail because of poor risk management, broader economic conditions, mismatch between assets and liabilities, fraud, and inadequate supervision. However, there should be a defined metric to evaluate a bank's safety. Unfortunately, there isn't a reliable one.

Generally speaking, credit unions are safer than banks in a collapse. This is because credit unions use fewer risks, serving individuals and small businesses rather than large investors, like a bank.
Attorney General Paxton joined a multistate investigation into Bank of America Corporation, Wells Fargo & Company, Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC, JPMorgan Chase & Co., The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., and Citigroup Inc. for potential violations of consumer protection laws.
Here's what typically happens. The FDIC announces that the bank is closed, and the FDIC is appointed as its receiver so it can help use the bank's assets to pay depositors and creditors. In most cases, the FDIC will try to find another banking institution to acquire the failed bank.

Based on the analysis of Bank of America's financial health, risk profile, and regulatory compliance, we can conclude that the bank is relatively safe from any trouble or collapse. The bank's financial performance has been stable, and its balance sheet shows a healthy level of capital and a diversified loan portfolio.
NYCB and Republic First are much smaller than two of the three banks that failed after historic deposit runs in March 2023. But bankers, regulators and analysts are worried that more trouble could spark another crisis of confidence in regional banks. each fell more than 1%.
What two banks are failing in the US?
Two regional US banks, California-based Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and New York's Signature Bank, have collapsed under the weight of heavy losses on their bond portfolios and a massive run on deposits.
The increase in mobile banking use, inflation and interest rates, and real-estate struggles all contributed to why 2023 experienced so many banks shutting their doors. These issues caused Silicon Valley Bank to collapse in March 2023, with First Republic Bank and Signature Bank following only a few months later.
JPMorgan Chase is the largest bank in the U.S. That worries some critics, who see it as "too big to fail." SCOTT SIMON, HOST: Ever since the global financial crisis, there's been a lot of consolidation among banks. Many of them have gotten larger, but one towers over all.
PNC is the sixth largest bank in the country with over $500 billion in assets. That makes it dramatically smaller than the Big Four banks that are informally labeled “too big to fail” and formally classified as Global Systemically Important Banks (GSIBs).
Perhaps the strongest argument that firms such as BlackRock and Fidelity can make is that unlike many of the large institutions already identified as too big too fail, these firms didn't need a bailout during the financial crisis. In other words, history is on their side.
