What is a straight up bet?
If a bettor says they are picking the Lakers to win straight up, that means they took the Lakers to win on the moneyline. So any Lakers win, regardless of score, will be a winning bet.
Example: If you choose Green Bay to beat Chicago -4 points (-4), and that's the only wager on your slip, that's a straight bet. A straight bet is generally made at 11/10 odds, meaning you would risk $11 to profit $10.
So even when you're talking about placing a single-game wager, you are placing a straight bet. Betting a moneyline wager on a team to win the Super Bowl is considered a straight bet, as well as betting an over/under on any given NBA game.
Moneyline meaning
A moneyline is one of the most popular and simplest forms of sports betting in which you pick a team or player to win straight up, without a point spread involved.
A straight-up bet is simply placing a wager on one number. For instance, betting on the number eight would be a straight-up bet, as would betting on 27, 35, or any other number. This type of bet is the riskiest one you can make.
STRAIGHT BET – A straight bet is one bet on a game or event decided by a point spread, point total or money line. PARLAY – Also called a “Combination” bet, a parlay joins multiple results on different wagers into a single bet. In order to be a winner, the bettor must not lose any events in the parlay.
Underdogs are always listed with a plus sign next to their odds, which indicates how much money you'd win on a $100 wager. For example, let's say an underdog in a baseball game is listed at +140. If you bet $100 on that team to win, you'd get back $240 if that team wins outright.
What happens if you bet $100 on a moneyline? If you bet $100 on a moneyline, you might win some money or lose your wager. If the odds for your moneyline bet were +100, you would profit $100 if the team you backed won. If they lose, you are out $100.
Because they are “straight” bets, the payout is the same regardless of which team you bet on. Straight bets using the point spread are at odds of 11-to-10, meaning you are asked to risk $11 to win $10. This is how the sportsbooks make their money.
In bartending, the terms "straight up" and "up" ordinarily refer to an alcoholic drink that is shaken or stirred with ice and then strained and served in a stemmed glass without ice. "Straight" ordinarily refers to a single, unmixed liquor served without any water, ice, or other mixer.
What is the difference between straight and up?
Some use straight to mean a white spirit chilled and served in a co*cktail glass. An example of this would be chilled vodka in a stemmed glass. If the vodka were diluted with ice, it would technically be up. If, however, the bottle of vodka itself was chilled and no ice was added, it would be neat.

Those bets which you can place on any single number, including the 0 and 00 are called “Straight Up”. The odds of winning such a bet are 1:37 while the payout is 35:1.
What Does a +200 Money Line Mean? A +200 money line would mean that if you placed a $100 bet, you would win $200. It also tells you that the team is not expected to win, as it is the underdog in the game.
A two-pick parlay has an implied probability of 27.78%. A three-team NFL parlay wager has odds of +600 (Risk $100 to win $600) with a probability of 14.29%. Three single $100 spread bets at -110 odds would win $91 each in comparison to the three-team NFL spread parlay with +600 odds.
As you can see, your ROI is twice as worse as the one we obtained on single wagers (-4.5%). This means you are going to lose money twice faster if you do 2-team parlays instead of single wagers. And again, that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you combine more than two teams on your parlays, it gets even worse.
The best and most profitable strategy to employ with parlays is known as a correlated parlay. Another way to incorporate parlays into your strategy is to bet into weak numbers and combine them with other, stronger spreads to increase your exposure to the weak number.
Odds are presented as a positive or negative number next to the team's name. A negative number means the team is favored to win, while a positive number indicates that they are the underdog.
Cashing out can be tempting because it lets you lock in a profit or mitigate your losses. Unfortunately cashing out your bet also has a negative ROI over the long run. Sportsbooks understand their customers can get trigger happy, so they make sure those early cash outs are much lower than they should be.
Should you bet on the favorite? It's not a simple yes or no answer on whether you should bet on the favorite in a given matchup. It's a matter of value. If you think a favorite is being undervalued by the oddsmaker, then you should consider betting on that team.
Does a tie ruin a moneyline bet?
In this type of moneyline bet, you are betting on the winning team. In case of a tie/draw, the bet results in a push and the wager is returned to you. When using American odds, the positive moneyline is the underdog and the negative moneyline is the favorite.
Moneyline betting is where you pick the winner of an event or game. Negative odds indicate favorites, and underdogs have positive odds. The range between the odds can indicate the closeness of the matchup in the eyes of the sportsbook.
✅ Higher payouts: Moneyline bets can offer higher payouts than spread bets, especially for underdog teams less likely to win the game outright.
Don't bet more than 1% of your household income before tax per month. For example, someone with a household income of $70,000 before tax should gamble no more than $58 per month.
There is no definitive right answer here. Some people "flat bet" the same amount each game; others believe the stronger their perceived edge or information is, the bigger the bet should be. Keeping your bets within 2-5% of your bankroll is likely more important than whether you bet the same amount every time.
