Is the money market FDIC insured?
Q: Is every financial product at a bank covered by the FDIC? A: No. FDIC deposit insurance only covers certain deposit products, such as checking and savings accounts, money market deposit accounts (MMDAs), and certificates of deposit (CDs).
Like other deposit accounts, money market accounts are insured by the FDIC or NCUA, up to $250,000 held by the same owner or owners. Money market accounts tend to pay you higher interest rates than other types of savings accounts.
Yes, the FDIC's deposit insurance fund currently has enough money to cover 1.27% of deposits.
First and foremost, money market accounts are typically safe because they're insured by the federal government. If you open a money market account at a federally insured bank, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) insures up to $250,000 of your cash per bank, per depositor.
The FDIC protects the money depositors place in insured banks in the unlikely event of an insured-bank failure. Each depositor is insured to at least $250,000 per insured bank. FDIC deposit insurance covers all types of deposits held at an insured bank.
Money market mutual funds, on the other hand, are not federally insured. These funds are considered short-term, low-risk investments and are typically offered by brokerages — which are not covered by the FDIC or NCUA — instead of banks or credit unions.
Money market funds aren't risk free
While money market funds typically invest in lower-risk assets, experts say it's important to know the funds aren't risk free. “It's a rarity that such funds lose value,” said CFP Randy Bruns, founder of Model Wealth in Naperville, Illinois.
Investment products that are not deposits, such as mutual funds, annuities, life insurance policies and stocks and bonds, are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance.
Millionaires don't worry about FDIC insurance. Their money is held in their name and not the name of the custodial private bank. Other millionaires have safe deposit boxes full of cash denominated in many different currencies.
FDIC Deposit Insurance Coverage
The FDIC does not insure assets issued by non-bank entities, such as crypto companies. Since the FDIC began insuring deposits in 1934, no depositor has lost a penny of FDIC-insured funds as a result of an insured bank's failure.
What is the downside to a money market account?
Money market accounts are savings accounts that often offer higher interest rates than regular savings accounts and often incorporate checking account features, like easy access to cash. Yet they can also have downsides: Many have minimum balance requirements and excessive fees.
There's no risk of you losing your deposit with a money market account. While money market accounts are considered low-risk accounts, that doesn't mean there aren't small risks to be aware of. The biggest risk a money market account poses is that your money may lose value over time to inflation.
Disadvantages of money market accounts may include hefty minimum balance requirements and monthly fees — and you might be able to find better yields with other deposit accounts.
Money market accounts are considered safe, low-risk investments. They earn interest and allow for easy access to your money. Your balance is also FDIC-insured, so it's unlikely that you'll lose money. However, fees and interest rate changes could deplete your returns.
The FDIC adds together all single accounts owned by the same person at the same bank and insures the total up to $250,000.
OnPath Credit Union High Yield Checking
OnPath Credit Union's High Yield Checking is also a transactional account, not a savings account. But it comes with an impressive 7.00% APY that surpasses what you'd normally see from checking accounts at brick-and-mortar banks or savings accounts at online-only banks.
Types of Money Market Funds
Government funds must invest 95.5% of their assets in government-issued securities and consequently are extremely safe. Municipal money market funds invest in municipal bonds issued by municipalities and municipal agencies, which pay interest exempt from federal income tax.
Insurance. Since money market funds are investment products, they're not insured against loss by the FDIC or NCUA. Your investment could lose money.
They attempt to keep their net asset value (NAV) at a constant $1.00 per share—only the yield goes up and down. But a money market's per share NAV may fall below $1.00 if the investments perform poorly. While investor losses in money market funds have been rare, they are possible.
If you're saving for something you'll need the money for in less than three to five years, saving in a money market fund may make sense for you. Money market funds are ideal for short-term saving because they invest in highly liquid securities with the objective of capital preservation and income.
Should I worry about money market funds?
Because they invest in fixed income securities, money market funds and ultra-short duration funds are subject to three main risks: interest rate risk, liquidity risk and credit risk.
The FDIC refers to these different categories as "ownership categories." This means that a bank customer who has multiple accounts may qualify for more than $250,000 in insurance coverage if the customer's funds are deposited in different ownership categories and the requirements for each ownership category are met.
Money market funds, like mutual funds, are neither FDIC insured nor guaranteed by the U.S. government or government agency and are not deposits or obligations of, or guaranteed by, any bank.
The FDIC insures up to $250,000 per account holder, insured bank and ownership category in the event of bank failure. If you have more than $250,000 in the bank, or you're approaching that amount, you may want to structure your accounts to make sure your funds are covered.
Of all the financial institutions reporting, including commercial banks and federal savings banks, there are approximately 860 million deposit accounts (not including retirement accounts). But fewer than one percent–just 0.83 percent–of these accounts have more than $250,000.
