Do banks charge to buy T bills?
When you buy T-bills through your bank, it may charge you additional fees and expenses such as sales commissions or transaction charges. These extra costs can add up over time and eat into your returns on your investment.
You can purchase T-bills through TreasuryDirect for as little as $100 or buy them on the secondary market through your broker. Many online brokers don't charge fees for buying T-bills.
Individuals, organizations, fiduciaries, and corporate investors may buy Treasury securities through a bank, broker, or dealer.
T-Bill Redemptions and Interest Earned
T-bills are issued at a discount from the par value (also known as the face value) of the bill, meaning the purchase price is less than the face value of the bill. So, for example, a $1,000 bill might cost the investor $950.
The biggest downside of investing in T-bills is that you're going to get a lower rate of return compared to other investments, such as certificates of deposit, money market funds, corporate bonds or stocks. If you're looking to make some serious gains in your portfolio, T-bills aren't going to cut it.
While you can buy Treasurys like T-bonds directly from the source — the U.S. government — one of the most common ways people add them to their portfolio is by investing in Treasury exchange-traded funds or mutual funds through bank, brokerage or retirement accounts.
A higher rate set by the Federal Reserve means lower returns on T-bills. By contrast, CDs and high-yield savings accounts tend to give higher returns as the Federal Reserve benchmark rate increases.
Treasury bills can be a good choice for those looking for a low-risk, fixed-rate investment that doesn't require setting money aside for as long as a CD might call for. However, you still run the risk of losing out on higher rates and returns if the market is on the upswing while your money is locked in.
1 Year Treasury Rate is at 4.92%, compared to 4.93% the previous market day and 5.18% last year. This is higher than the long term average of 2.94%. The 1 Year Treasury Rate is the yield received for investing in a US government issued treasury security that has a maturity of 1 year.
You can only buy T-bills in electronic form, either from a brokerage firm or directly from the government at TreasuryDirect.gov. (You can also buy Series I savings bonds through TreasuryDirect.gov.)
Where is the best place to buy T-bills?
One of the most common ways to purchase Treasury bills is through a bank. Banks usually offer an array of T-bill products with varying maturities and yields, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your investment needs.
The minimum amount that you can purchase of any given Treasury Bill, Note, Bond, TIPS, or FRNs is $100.
3 Month Treasury Bill Rate is at 5.24%, compared to 5.24% the previous market day and 4.83% last year. This is higher than the long term average of 4.19%. The 3 Month Treasury Bill Rate is the yield received for investing in a government issued treasury security that has a maturity of 3 months.
When the bill matures, you are paid its face value. You can hold a bill until it matures or sell it before it matures.
It's always possible to lose money when investing, but the chance of that happening with a government bond is close to zero. The U.S. government has an excellent history of repaying its debts, so you can count on your investment being safe.
Why Buffett Loves Treasury Bills. In 2022, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway held a whopping $126 billion in U.S. Treasury bills. Buffett reportedly prefers T-bills to other options because he never wants to worry about whether or not Berkshire's pile of cash is safely invested.
3 Year Treasury Rate | 4.33% |

30-10 Year Treasury Yield Spread | 0.15% |
5 Year Treasury Rate | 4.15% |

The limit for noncompetitive purchases is $10 million for each security type and term, for each auction. This limit applies regardless of whether you're buying a bill, note, bond, Floating Rate Note, or TIPS, and regardless of what method you use to make the purchase (TreasuryDirect, broker, or dealer).
Is there a maximum amount I can buy? In a calendar year, one Social Security Number or one Employer Identification Number may buy: up to $10,000 in electronic I bonds, and. up to $5,000 in paper I bonds (with your tax refund)
When short term T bills mature, the interest income is mistakenly shown as capital gains in tax reports. The interest is taxable on Fed, tax exempt on most states. T bills are short term zero coupon purchased at a discount and paid at face vale at maturity.
How do I buy a T bill?
- Log in to your TreasuryDirect account.
- Click “BuyDirect” in top navigation bar.
- Choose “Bills” under “Marketable Securities.”
- Pick your term, auction date, purchase amount and reinvestment (optional).
The pros and cons of taking refuge in cash now that yields are hovering above 5%. Cash investors haven't had it this good in years. After a long period of near-zero yields, yields on the three-month Treasury bill have been as high as 5.5% so far in 2023—their highest level since December 2000.
Compared with Treasury notes and bills, Treasury bonds usually pay the highest interest rates because investors want more money to put aside for the longer term. For the same reason, their prices, when issued, go up and down more than the others.
Treasury bonds tend to pay higher interest than the shorter T-bills and notes to compensate investors for the interest rate risks they take with their purchase. Keep in mind the opposite can also happen when interest rates fall and the price of your bond increases. Track your finances all in one place.
The FDIC does not insure U.S. Treasury bills, bonds or notes, but these investments are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government.
