Why are so many banks failing right now?
A bank could also become insolvent if it holds bonds and the prices of those bonds fall because of rising market interest rates (interest rates and bond prices are inversely related). Solvency problems can lead to liquidity problems if depositors' concerns about their ability to withdraw their funds ignite a bank run.
A run on deposits (leaving the bank without the cash to pay customer withdrawals). Too many bad loans/assets that fall sharply in value (eroding the bank's capital reserves). A mismatch between what the bank can earn on its assets (primarily loans) and what it has to pay on its liabilities (primarily deposits).

A clearer label might be “too big to be allowed to fail.” These are companies that the government considers so large and interconnected that the demise of any one might pose a threat to the financial system and the overall economy.
U.S. investigations
Internal investigations at the FDIC and Federal Reserve noted that deregulation, not subjecting medium-sized banks to high scrutiny, reduced enforcement of remaining regulations, and government staffing shortages weakened oversight and allowed mismanagement of banks to cause their collapse.
While the US banking sector is stable, growing vulnerabilities leave at least some institutions under a near-term threat of funding pressure and capital shortfalls, according to Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff.

It remains unclear whether traditional banking will become extinct soon; however, what is certain is that its role will continue to evolve if it is going to survive in this ever-changing landscape of finance.

"In future, probably banking may cease to be a separate service. Instead, banking would be embedded in all the products and services which consumers are expected to avail. Embedded finance is the integration of financial services or tools within the products or services of a non-financial organisation.
Recently, a report posted on the Social Science Research Network found that 186 banks in the United States are at risk of failure or collapse due to rising interest rates and a high proportion of uninsured deposits.
Companies Considered Too Big to Fail
The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. JPMorgan Chase & Co. State Street Corp. Wells Fargo & Co.
The largest bank failure ever occurred when Washington Mutual Bank went under in 2008. At the time, it had about $307 billion in assets. During the uncertainty of the banking crisis, however, Washington Mutual experienced a bank run where customers withdrew almost $17 billion in assets in less than 10 days.
The study also examined the proportion of banks' funding that comes from uninsured depositors with accounts worth over $250,000. A new report has found that 186 banks in the US are at risk of failure due to rising interest rates and a high proportion of uninsured deposits.
In most cases, the FDIC will try to find another banking institution to acquire the failed bank. If that happens, customers' accounts will simply transfer over to the new bank. You will get information about the transition, and you will likely get new debit cards and checks (if applicable).
The worst banks are Wells Fargo and Citibank. Wells Fargo is the worst bank overall, with a high percentage of unresolved complaints and loss of Better Business Bureau accreditation. Citibank has a string of high-profile cases involving operational chaos and regulatory fines.
Banks will double down on tech investments in 2024
About three-quarters of banks and finance firms are planning to invest more in technology spending, according to recent research from Arizent , American Banker's parent company.
Are credit unions safer than banks?
Generally, credit unions are viewed as safer than banks, although deposits at both types of financial institutions are usually insured at the same dollar amounts. The FDIC insures deposits at most banks, and the NCUA insures deposits at most credit unions.
