Are ETF safer than mutual funds?
In terms of safety, neither the mutual fund nor the ETF is safer than the other due to its structure. Safety is determined by what the fund itself owns. Stocks are usually riskier than bonds, and corporate bonds come with somewhat more risk than U.S. government bonds.
ETFs can be more tax-efficient than actively managed funds due to their lower turnover and fewer transactions that produce capital gains. ETFs are bought and sold on an exchange throughout the day while mutual funds can be bought or sold only once a day at the latest closing price.
“And they are incredibly cheap.” However, there are disadvantages of ETFs. They come with fees, can stray from the value of their underlying asset, and (like any investment) come with risks. So it's important for any investor to understand the downside of ETFs.
While these securities track a given index, using debt without shareholder equity makes leveraged and inverse ETFs risky investments over the long term due to leveraged returns and day-to-day market volatility. Mutual funds are strictly limited regarding the amount of leverage they can use.
ETFs usually carry a lower fee and can trade intraday like stocks. While the diversified kind nature of both mutual funds and ETFs can make them appealing to less risk-tolerant investors, but they still carry market risks that investors should consider know before investing.
ETFs and index mutual funds tend to be generally more tax efficient than actively managed funds. And, in general, ETFs tend to be more tax efficient than index mutual funds. You want niche exposure. Specific ETFs focused on particular industries or commodities can give you exposure to market niches.
When you buy or sell ETF shares, the price may be less than the net asset value (or, NAV) of the ETF. This discrepancy (aka: the "bid/ask spread") is often nominal, but for less actively traded ETFs, that might not always be the case. By contrast, mutual funds always trade at NAV, without any bid/ask spreads.
However, it's rare for broad-market ETFs to go to zero unless the entire market or sector it tracks collapses entirely. The sharpest decline the last few decades has been in 2007, when some total stock market ETFs like IWDA lost 37% in one year.
ETF | Assets Under Management | Expense Ratio |
---|---|---|
Invesco QQQ Trust (ticker: QQQ) | $240 billion | 0.2% |
Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) | $71.7 billion | 0.1% |
Invesco AI and Next Gen Software ETF (IGPT) | $254 million | 0.6% |

"Overall, Vanguard's ETFs are widely acknowledged as dependable choices for investors seeking cost-effective means to achieve diversified exposure," August says. A great example is VT, which provides investors with exposure to over 9,800 global equities, all for a 0.07% expense ratio.
What are the disadvantages of ETF?
- Higher Management Fees. Not all ETFs are passive. ...
- Less Control Over Investment Choices. When you invest in an ETF, you're buying a basket of stocks intended to align with the fund's objectives. ...
- May Not Beat Individual Stock Returns.
Some fees are a percentage of the amount traded but some fees are fixed, which can become a drag if you do numerous small trades over a high number of ETFs. In order to have a cost-efficient portfolio, you should seek an optimal degree of diversification while limiting the number of ETFs in your portfolio.
ETFs are considered to be low-risk investments because they are low-cost and hold a basket of stocks or other securities, increasing diversification. For most individual investors, ETFs represent an ideal type of asset with which to build a diversified portfolio.

ETFs offer benefits, including diversification, expert management, and liquidity at a fraction of the cost of alternative investing options. As a result, they are among the best-suggested investment vehicles for long-term investors.
Both are less risky than investing in individual stocks & bonds. ETFs and mutual funds both come with built-in diversification. One fund could include tens, hundreds, or even thousands of individual stocks or bonds in a single fund. So if 1 stock or bond is doing poorly, there's a chance that another is doing well.
Well, the answer depends. Stocks can be a great investment in some circ*mstances, while ETFs can be better in others. But for new investors, exchange-traded funds solve many problems, and they're an easy way to earn attractive returns — so they're a great starting point.
Key Takeaways. Not all ETFs offer the criteria for short-term trading, which includes high liquidity, cost efficiency, and price transparency. To maintain liquidity, traders should avoid ETFs that have a high percentage of off-exchange trades.
SPY was launched in January 1993 and was the very first ETF listed in the U.S.10. Index investing pioneer Vanguard's S&P 500 Index Fund was the first index mutual fund for individual investors.
Do ETFs go down in a recession?
ETFs. Investment funds are a strategic option during a recession because they have built-in diversification, minimizing volatility compared to individual stocks. However, the fees can get expensive for certain types of actively managed funds.
Liquidation of ETFs is strictly regulated; when an ETF closes, any remaining shareholders will receive a payout based on what they had invested in the ETF. Receiving an ETF payout can be a taxable event.
You're forced to sell or take liquidation proceeds, which can create a tax burden or lock in investment losses. You may incur a capital gains tax on profits if the ETF's in a taxable account, that is, a non-retirement account. If you owned the fund less than a year, the profit will be taxed at your normal tax rate.
